This session caters for new staff in libraries who want to know the basics of call numbers and shelf organisation, and for experienced staff who wish to examine their current practices in this regard.

We will explore many aspects of call numbers, labelling, and resource arrangements in libraries, including:

  • Call number basics – what are they, why do we have them

  • Classification and book numbers

  • Benefits and drawbacks of traditional practices

  • Options and alternatives for arranging fiction and non-fiction (e.g. Genrefication, dynamic shelving, bookshop style, custom classifications)

  • Call numbers for digital resources

Bio: Making information discoverable through effective metadata, is a thread that links Renate Beilharz's librarianship career as teacher-librarian in secondary schools, as cataloguing educator in TAFE, and as the current Catalogue Content Manager at SCIS. Renate loves cataloguing not just because it puts the world in order, but because it facilitates connections between people and quality resources that meet their information needs. Renate's current interest is making sure that catalogue metadata is respectful, and meets the needs of diverse end-users.
