Wonderful news for a library and literacy legend.
I have some news! You may remember that late last year, I was recognised as Australia’s top researcher in my field, and one of 250 top researchers across all fields (unranked). This made me re-evaluate my potential impact in this space and seriously rethink my strategic goals moving forward, to consider how I can best use my time and energy to deliver quality research in libraries, literacy, education and research communication. Today I confirmed a new appointment at Notre Dame Fremantle (beginning in March), where I’ll be working in the School of Education as an Associate Professor. While I’ve been strategically scaling back my consulting commitments since I reoriented my goals last year, I’ll still be doing some 2024 consulting work in Australia and overseas (watch this space!). Also, I wanted to note that I’m really grateful to those kind friends and peers who hype and support my pivots and shifts in this space, including Hajnalka Molloy, Anabela Malpique, Professor Susan Ledger, Saiyidi Mat Roni, Julia Morris and many more. You give me the confidence it takes to make bold decisions. Thank you!

Congratulations Dr Margaret Merga on this well-deserved recognition! Thank you for your tireless efforts to amplify the work and impact of school libraries and school library staff. #SchoolLibraries #Literacy #StudentsNeedSchoolLibraries #TeacherLibrarians #SchoolLibrarians #Libraries #AussieED
Cool surprise! I try to avoid posting twice in a day, but I just found out that according to The Australian newspaper today, I’m one of Australia’s top 250 researchers for 2024. Apparently, I’m Australia’s leading researcher in the research field “English Language & Literature”. Nice! Of course, at present I don’t even have an academic research job (I’m an honorary adjunct at the wonderful University of Newcastle), so I won’t be the leader for long, but I’m certainly not complaining. I’m going to swan around feeling very self-important all day. On a more serious note, how can we use this for advocacy? Well, Australia’s leading researcher in the research field “English Language & Literature” says that school libraries are absolutely vital institutions that need to be adequately resourced and staffed by professionals. Maybe my messages will be amplified now. We can only hope :) ASLA Australian School Library Association https://lnkd.in/gJb4cqbY
