ASLA XXI Biennial Conference 2009

Perth Convention Exhibition Centre, Perth, Western Australia

29 September to 2 October 2009

Conference welcome message

22 November 2008 - Jenny Dickman, Conference Chairperson

Welcome to Western Australia – the “State of Excitement” and the capital city of Perth, “City of Lights”, the host city of the ASLA XXI Biennial Conference.

On behalf of the organising committee, I would encourage you to register for the conference to enjoy all the aspects that the conference has to present. ASLA XXI provides a wonderful opportunity to explore all that our state has to offer.

The conference promises to be both stimulating and informative with a wonderful array of keynote and guest speakers from Western Australia, interstate and overseas. Delegates will have a wide range of sessions to choose from and will have a difficult decision in deciding which sessions to attend.

The Conference sessions consider our theme, Engage, Explore, Celebrate where we engage the diverse range of learners and cultures in our schools, reflect on our current practice, celebrate our successes and explore the potential for the future. Our three conference strands are:

  • Engage in a plethora of presentations and activities to develop learning and leading as information specialists.
  • Explore issues, technologies and pedagogies that have an impact on school libraries.
  • Celebrate our successes and inspire delegates to share their visions for future planning.

Offset by the tranquil waters of the Swan River, tourists commonly refer to the beautiful city of Perth as the “friendly city”. The historic port city of Fremantle is accessible by car or train approximately 20 minutes from Perth. You can enjoy a relaxing swim or walk on the glorious beaches; a visit to the historic port city of Fremantle; the Swan Valley region, one of Western Australia’s oldest wine regions; a ferry to Rottnest Island or a visit to the Perth Hills, wineries and orchards which offers amazing views over the Perth city.

Our author breakfast will be held in the beautiful Frasers Restaurant, Kings Park which overlooks the city. The conference dinner will be held in the Convention Centre ballroom which also offers views over the Swan River. The social events and tours offer a wide range of choice to unearth all that Perth has on offer and provide many opportunities for networking.

The extensive trade exhibition will provide delegates with a wide range of products from leading companies in the industry.

I look forward to meeting as many delegates as possible and welcoming you all to our wonderful city on the Swan.
